First Day Jitters: Preparing Your Child for Their First Enrichment Class

Why First Days Feel Scary

Starting a new enrichment class is genuinely challenging for children. They're facing:

1. An unfamiliar environment
2. New adults and children
3. Unknown expectations
4. Separation from parents
5. Even confident children can struggle with new beginnings. Your preparation can make all the difference.

One Week Before: Plant the Seeds

Visit the Venue

If possible, visit the location before the first class:

6. Walk around the outside
7. Point out where you'll drop off and pick up
8. Look through windows if you can see the space
9. Notice positive details ("Look, they have a water fountain.")
10. Read Books About New Experiences

Stories normalise anxiety and model coping:

11. "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn
12. "First Day Jitters" by Julie Danneberg
13. "Wemberly Worried" by Kevin Henkes
14. Talk About What to Expect

Be specific but positive:

15. "There will be about 10 other children your age"
16. "The teacher's name is Miss Sarah"
17. "First, they usually do warm-ups, then the main activity"
18. Role Play the Experience

Practice helps reduce anxiety:

19. Act out saying hello to the teacher
20. Practice asking to go to the bathroom
21. Rehearse what to do if they feel unsure
22. The Night Before

Prepare Practically

23. Lay out clothes and equipment together
24. Pack the bag together
25. Check what snacks/water they can bring
26. Ensure adequate sleep (anxious children need MORE rest)
27. Manage Expectations

28. "It's normal to feel a bit nervous"
29. "You don't have to be perfect"
30. "The teacher knows it's your first day"
31. Create a Comfort Item

32. A small photo of family in their pocket
33. A special hair tie or bracelet
34. A "brave stone" to hold
35. Drop-Off Day Strategies

Keep Your Own Anxiety in Check

Children mirror parent emotions. Even if you're nervous, project calm confidence.

Arrive Early But Not Too Early

5-10 minutes early allows settling in without extended waiting.

Brief Goodbyes

Long goodbyes increase anxiety. Keep it short:

1. Quick hug

2. Confident statement: "You're going to have fun."

3. Clear departure: "I'll be right here at 5pm"

4. Walk away without looking back

What If They Cry?

Do: Trust the teacher, leave as planned, call after 15 minutes to check

Don't: Sneak away (breaks trust), stay longer (prolongs distress), make promises you can't keep

Most children settle within 5-10 minutes of parent departure. Extended goodbyes often make it worse.

After the First Class

Pick-Up Approach

36. Be on time or early (anxious children watch the clock)
37. Greet with calm warmth, not excessive enthusiasm
38. Don't immediately ask about the class
39. The "Wait and Wonder" Technique

Instead of: "How was class? Did you have fun? Who did you play with?"

Try: "I'm curious about your afternoon..." then wait

Or mention something you noticed: "I saw they had mats out when I picked you up"

Handling Negative Reports

If they say they didn't enjoy it:

40. Validate: "Starting new things is hard"
41. Separate feeling from facts: "What did you actually do?"
42. Commit to giving it time: "Let's try three more times and then decide"
43. Common Scenarios

"I don't want to go back"

Usually temporary. Commit to 4-6 sessions before deciding.

They loved it

Great. But watch for "honeymoon period" wearing off in weeks 2-3.

They're quiet about it

Normal for processors. The stories often come out days later, at random moments.
