Trial Classes: What to Look For Before Committing to an Enrichment Programme

Why Trial Classes Matter

A trial class is your best window into what your child's experience will actually be like. But most parents use them passively — sitting on the sidelines, checking their phone, and asking their child "Did you like it?" afterwards.

You can do better.

The 10-Point Trial Class Checklist

Environment & Safety

1. Cleanliness — Are facilities well-maintained? Clean bathrooms?

2. Safety measures — First aid kit visible? Emergency exits clear? Staff-to-child ratios appropriate?

3. Access control — Can anyone walk in, or is there a sign-in process?

Teaching Quality

4. Instructor engagement — Are they actively teaching or just supervising?

5. Differentiation — Do they adjust for different ability levels?

6. Encouragement style — Positive reinforcement or pressure-based?

7. Class management — How do they handle disruptions or shy children?

Programme Structure

8. Warm-up and cool-down — Is there a clear structure?

9. Progression clarity — Can they explain what your child will learn over a term?

10. Communication — How do they update parents on progress?

Questions to Ask

Before committing, ask:

1. What happens if my child misses a class?
2. Is there a minimum commitment?
3. How do you handle children who are struggling?
4. What qualifications do your instructors hold?
5. Can I observe a regular class (not just the trial)?
6. Red Flags

7. No trial class offered (or a long waiting list for trials)
8. Reluctance to share instructor qualifications
9. Pushy sales tactics during or immediately after the trial
10. Very large class sizes with inadequate supervision
11. No clear curriculum or progression structure
12. What to Ask Your Child

Instead of "Did you like it?", try:

13. "What was the most fun part?"
14. "What did the teacher ask you to do?"
15. "Would you want to go back next week?"
16. "Was there anything you didn't like?"
