What Age Should My Child Start Swimming Lessons in KL?
When children are ready for swimming lessons, what each age stage looks like, and how to choose a class in Kuala Lumpur.

The short answer
Many children start parent-and-baby water classes from around six months. Structured group lessons usually begin from about age three or four, when children can follow simple instructions without a parent in the water. There is no single right age. Comfort in water and readiness to listen matter more than the number.
Age stages
Six months to three years. Parent-and-child sessions focus on water confidence, floating with support and enjoying the pool. These are not about stroke technique.
Three to five years. Small group lessons introduce kicking, floating, breath control and entering and leaving the pool safely. Short sessions of around 30 minutes suit this age.
Five years and above. Children build strokes, distance and stamina. Many progress through graded levels.
Signs your child is ready
Your child is comfortable having water on their face, can follow two-step instructions and can stay with a group for half an hour. If they are anxious, a smaller class or private lessons can help.
What to check before booking
Ask about the coach's swimming and lifesaving certification, the pupil-to-coach ratio, water depth and temperature, and who is on poolside supervision. In Kuala Lumpur's heat, check whether the pool is shaded or indoors.
